Contemporary visual art and the wellbeing of older people: policy and practice seminar

The Art and Identity project is based around contemporary visual art and the wellbeing of older people and aims to develop research-informed arts policy and arts interventions that will improve the wellbeing of older people. 

The aims of this seminar are to identify issues and questions associated with older people, the arts and wellbeing and health from the perspectives of the project partners and identify how research and those of other research groups working in this area can help satisfy them.

Key questions:

• What does research tell us about the relationship between older people’s engagement with contemporary visual art and wellbeing?

• How can this contribute to policy and practice in terms of instrumental impact (contributing directly to the way that policy is developed, implemented and audited and conceptual impact (capacity building, improving understanding)?

• How can this contribute to new policy and practice that helps to satisfy the needs of older people who engage with galleries displaying contemporary visual art; museum/gallery/arts practitioners/charities/agencies who work with older people and the arts and; policy makers?
