Funding Schemes

Doctoral Training Grant
Doctoral Training Grants are awarded to universities based on research grant income.  These grants may also be used to fund some forms of collaborative training. 

Fellowships
Funding to help researchers spend their time on research. We are developing a new flexible framework for research career support which will focus fellowship support where growth in capability is required and where emerging leaders are able to integrate their work into the wider research landscape. The new approach will be introduced over summer 2011.

First grant scheme
Research grants for new academics in their first appointment, including most fellowship holders. No closing dates.

Follow-on fund
Up to 12 months' funding for EPSRC grant holders to work on the very early stages of turning research outcomes into a commercial proposition. Annual call issued in autumn.

Industrial CASE Accounts
Funding for PhD students where businesses take the lead in arranging projects with an academic partner of their choice.

Networks and Mobility Awards
Funding to bring together researchers, industry and other groups to develop collaborations through workshops, visits and part-time coordinators. Includes support for Discipline Hopping and Postdoctoral Mobility - short term funding for researchers to immerse themselves in another discipline, providing contact time that allows them to develop skills and collaborations. No closing dates.

Platform grants
Grants, up to five years long, providing leading research groups with stability and flexibility so that they can keep key research staff. No closing dates.

Programme grants
Research grants, up to six years long, providing long-term funding to support related research activities focusing on one major theme.

Sandpits
Intense interactive workshops with dedicated research funding available to tackle topics needing a new dimension in thinking. You can get involved by applying to attend a sandpit. There is a call for participants for each sandpit event with a closing date.

Standard Research
Our largest funding scheme used to deliver a wide range of grants of varying amounts and durations. Used for calls where there are closing dates and for research base funding where you can apply at any time.

Includes Overseas Travel Grants - small grants providing short-term funding for visits to non-UK centres to study techniques or develop international collaborations with no closing dates.

Training Centres
Students at EPSRC centres carry out a PhD level project together with taught coursework in a supportive and exciting environment.

Training Schools
Funding for summer schools and the Mathematical Sciences Integrated PhD Centres.

Technology Programme
Grants awarded in conjunction with the Technology Strategy Board's Collaborative R&D competitions. See the TSB website for information about Technology Programme calls and closing dates.

Software for the future
Call for participants: Call for participants to a workshop focusing on software for the future. This is part of the implementation of EPSRC’s Software as an Infrastructure strategy.
