Gerontology 2013: Challenging Futures' is a British Society of Gerontology Conference pre-event

Join other postgrad students and postdocs in an interesting and stimulating day of presentations and open dialogue.

In recent years, the ERA pre-conference event has been an opportunity for postgrads and postdocs to network, present their research, and learn from experienced academics in the field. This year's event will be a stimulating mix of networking, learning and exchange. The day will include to presentation sessions. networking support forum and dialogue sessions.

Keynote Speaker: Dr Debora Price

Challenging Futures:  Intergenerational Conflict and Critical Gerontology in an Age of Austerity

After qualifying as a barrister in the mid-80s Debora practised law in the Middle Temple, ultimately becoming a found member of Corum Champers, a set of barristers' Chambers specialising in family law.  She was drawn into her PhD research by concern over possible increases in pensioner poverty as a result of rapid social changes in family life.  Now a Senior Lecturer in the Social Policy of Ageing at the Institute of Gerontology at King's College London, Debora's research centres on pensions and pension systems, the sociology of money, social policy relating to finance over the lifecourse, financial services for an ageing population and the legal regulation of money in marriage, cohabitation, divorce and widowhood.

Careers Outside the Academy?  International Development and Think Tanks 

Jane has a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology from Oxford, an MA in International Politics from SOAS, and a DPhil in International Relations from Oxford. Whilst completing her studies she worked at the International Institute for Strategic Studies as a Research Associate, producing an Adelphi Paper on Security Sector Reform, and as a consultant for UNHCR. She has spent more than a decade in the Middle East working with local charities, and as a consultant for Oxfam, the United Nations, and a Defence Research Establishment. Jane is currently Careers Team Leader at the University of Oxford, specialising in talking with students interested in working in International Development and Think Tanks.
